Location, location, location?

Once upon a time, the success of an agency was focused largely on its location. As a vast majority of big businesses and brands sat within cities, PR and marketing consultancies followed suit. But is this still the case? There are so many flourishing companies based outside of urban areas, does this mindset still exist? Or has the introduction of online tools and services made location irrelevant?

As more brands chose their own location based on where potential employees might reside, are more PR consultancies leaving the cities? Or are satellite offices the answer to everything?

What do you think?

  • I don't think it's sector dependent - it's resource dependent. I don't mind if you're not in London, as long as I can video conference with you. You can be in Uzbekistan as long as you have sufficient bandwidth to send & receive multi-megabyte documents.

The limiting factor, for me, is time to reply. If you're in CET, I need you to respond in GMT. It's no good saying everyone has gone home when, to me, it's 1600 on a Friday and I've got a deadline to meet.

I cant speak for PR agencies, but in my role as a client I can comment that 'location' is no longer a major deciding factor on selecting the right resource. We aim to find the right agencies that understand how the role of communication is changing and how best to help us connect and build relationships with our customers. This search often takes us out of the main cities, discovering smaller, more agile agencies that innovate faster and in many cases provide better value because of their location.
